Are yams meat?? My mom said they're not but I think she's lying?

So I was watching this news show and the lady said this chick choked on a yam and died and I turned to my mom and said "SHE CHOKED ON MEAT??? HOW DUMB IS THAT CHICK?" and my mom said I was stupid and told me yams were not meat. I think she is lying trying to get me back for driving to her work and running into her office asking of the yoghurt was expired when her boss was talking to her. So, are yams meat?
